CAREFULLY READ THE INFORMATION below that applies to your situation to help you prepare to get your CDL permit. Your state and age will determine your next steps in the journey towards your CDL. If you need clarification, please reach out to the Florida campus CDL hotline number listed in that section below.
Did you know that CDL training through a registered provider is now mandated by the federal government? *In effect since Feb 7th 2022. NLC students can follow the below steps to show up ready to hit the ground running.

Florida Resident 18 Years of Age or Older
This section is for those who already possess a Florida Driver’s License.
- Obtain a DOT physical/med card
- Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit by taking the Florida CLP written test at the DMV (Class A with Airbrakes)

- Go to your local DMV with your required documents including your DOT physical paperwork

- Click U.S. Citizen – Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (flhsmv.gov) to view a list of DMV locations and required documents.

Non-Florida Resident 21 years of age or older
This section is for students who are at least 21 years old and coming from out of state. (EXCLUDING WA students) **Washington has state mandated hours requirements that go far and above the federal requirements. Due to this, any students coming from this state will need to get a Florida license and permit to train and test. Please follow directions under section titled, “Non-Florida Resident under 21”
If you are not from WA, and are at least 21 or older, you can train in Florida on your out of state permit. We encourage you to call us to make sure you qualify and understand what your next steps will be after you pass your knowledge exams.
- Obtain a DOT physical/med card
- Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit by taking the CLP written test at the DMV location near you (Class A with Airbrakes) *Note: Some states call the DMV by other names. EX: DPS, BMV etc. Search for Commercial Learner’s Permit testing for your state.

Non-Florida Resident under 21 years of age (Washington State residents follow these steps)
This section is for students who are 18-20 years old, and coming from out of state. (INCLUDING ALL WA students) **Washington has state mandated hours requirements that go far and above the federal requirements. Due to this, any students coming from this state, regardless of age, will need to get a Florida license and Florida permit to train and test in Florida. Please follow the directions below.
- Obtain a Florida Driver License. **You can also test for your permit on the same day you switch your license.

- Obtain a DOT physical/med card
- Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit by taking the CLP written test at the DMV location near you (Class A with Airbrakes)

Watch the Pre-Trip video below as many times as is needed to memorize the pre-trip inspection. This will be part of your practical training but is beneficial to have this memorized prior to arriving at campus.
